Although this time of year means the latest and greatest games for kids and adults, I’ve recently found myself drawn to Battle for Wesnoth, a free strategy game I encountered because it’s installed on all the computers in the Undergraduate Computing Lab at William & Mary. Although I just got a copy of Portal that I’m dying to play (can you believe I haven’t yet?), I can’t help but continue to load up Wesnoth to see if my cadre of elves has a chance against some immense force of an origin I can’t quite recall.

I don’t play games like this much anymore, but the low-fi, fantasy fun is a blast from the past for me– I used to love this kind of stuff.

Our tree this year.

I hope everyone is having a beautiful holiday season surrounded by family and friends.

My family normally celebrates by spending copious amounts of time with the many extended family members that live all over the Northern Virginia area, and this year won’t be any different– I’m off to Nativity Church for an evening Mass (Aimee’s performing), and then we’ll catch the tail end of dinner and dessert at my grandparents’.

Merry Christmas and happy 2009, from me to you. I’m fortunate to have you in my life, regardless of who you are or why you’re reading this.

Know what’s pretty cool? The new Animoto iPhone application. It lets you snap 8 to 16 photos with your camera, select a pre-loaded music track, produce a brief yet snazzy slideshow, all in less than five minutes.

Here’s a sample I created while doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in Borders today. It’s like citizen journalist meets Target commercial!
